netomat is supposed to be a non-linear browser. it uses netomatic markup language or nml. not another markup language.

new weblogs: medley, and screenshot.

6.29.99

interesting little color scheme picker.

6.28.99

i'm not sure where jakob is going with this alertbox. sure we need metacontent, but we need more bandwidth too, just because we need it, doesn't mean it's going to magically appear.

i'm going to be at web99 tomorrow, anyone interested in meeting for lunch?

why you should always register misspellings of your domain name.

weblog: the nerd intelligence agency.

this excerpt was enough to make me want to buy the book: the nudist on the late shift by po bronson.

damn, that iq test i took last month is meaningless, success is based on emotional intelligence

they've now pinpointed the brainwaves responsible for memory. supposedly, it'll help in epilepsy research. i'm not holding my breath tho.

got a strange email stating my journal had been listed on fireseek. apparently search engines are becoming specialized as well.

6.25.99

i have css on my mind tonight: matt haughey's css shop of horrors is an informative read, and todd fahrner's agitprop page has several good articles.

fear of style sheets (2): jeffery zeldman walks us through the nitty gritty of style sheet failures, in the latest a list apart.

damn, my site will never be cool, i don't have the supermodel up. kaliber1000 offers tips on cool design. thanks dave.

jamie zawinski's been playing since he left netscape: webcollage.

flash is making the web more like movies: kimble does it well.

6.24.99

philosophe has a wealth of info, i found this bit about ecommerce schemas there. thanks peterme.

so this is what i do... it's good to know information architects are such a hot commodity. did i mention i need a new job?

6.23.99

big nose bird seems to be a good resource that i've missed.

webword has a brief but informative bit about server side includes.

firetalk looks really cool, with one problem. i don't know if i want to actually talk to people. my id=12134. thanks peterme.

this is one of those "why didn't i think of that" concepts: dotbroker auctions domain names. thanks jjg.

a site for people who love puzzles and illusions. i think my eyes hurt now.

6.22.99

i think 128kb/sec will make it worth while to get a richochet.

more problems with amazon's review system. has someone hacked it or is it an internal person removing reviews?

6.18.99

how many stock options should you being asking for at that new job? the chronicle has a not-so-exact answer.

in this week's a list apart, jeffrey zeldman tells us why netscape did a good thing.

designreactor has a couple of cool java games: udder insanity and 3d cycle duel.

6.17.99

i'm 19.5% web designing pure according to this purity test. thanks jason.

beyond's boxer clad ceo stunt made it into salon. repulsive is the word that comes to mind.

new 'blogs: McD's Huskies Hoops, Julienne.com, the daily doozer.

another girl 'blog: librarian.net. thanks jessamyn.

6.16.99

weblog: gorjuss.

weblog: the occasional.

navihedra has an interesting new information presentation thing. i'm not sure how to utilize it tho. thanks peterme.

6.15.99

according to scott, this web-based game, evernight, is really good, and they're finally accepting new players. trouble is all the games are full. sigh.

chuck your pc software?? i don't buy this article, mostly because high speed connections are not here yet, and i hate web-based applications, they're too slow. but, on a similar note, i was theorizing that we don't need to buy software anymore. all the useful programs are free.

nice designed site: volume one.

6.14.99

i'm not sure exactly why this will be useful: gooey.

two more female webloggers: Pounce and yawl. thanks jjg.

i struggled to remember this site this afternoon. the navigation is extremely innovative. medium rare.

6.13.99

jacob's latest alertbox mentions how liquid layouts make sense, but if i go full screen with his page, it's impossible to read. i've decided liquid html is a bad thing.

6.12.99

i found out definitively yesterday, i'm not going to be doing cool site. i'm guessing that the guy helping out called the back-up people as well as the top picks. sigh. maybe next year.

improving web information systems with navigational patterns. well worth reading, especially if you deal with a large e-commerce site.

i have a solution to the unreadable (at least by me) hebrew article. it was written by jordan lewenski.

"the article was about weblogs in general, about the phenomenon and the creators and yours was mentioned as one of the better designed and as one of the few written by women."

it hadn't really occurred to me that very few women weblog. i know there's rebecca's pocket, lemonyellow, and window seat. are there any others?

6.8.99

a nice reminder of what we all should be doing dru jay's top ten _best_ things to do when designing web pages.

very interesting site that talks in depth about why there are so few female computer scientists. via memepool.

lance has redesigned glassdog. i really like the way the menu travels.

interesting article on information design.

6.7.99

no links today. i took a much needed vacation day to go shopping.

6.4.99

for the sick and twisted like my friend jeremy (who once blew up a rat in my microwave): gerbil burst. warning: it's an .exe

good webword interview with danny goodman, although very high-level.

australia's online market seems to be in the same state the valley was 1-2 years ago. i'd love to get in on that.

6.3.99

woohoo! i've been selected for the west coast cool site in a day team at web99 this year!

i heard about this months and months ago. i think it would be so cool to live there. although the name's kinda cheezy: freedom ship. thanks dave.

the gender gap online is finally closing.

6.2.99

i didn't realize setting up dsl was such a challenge!

6.1.99

while i'm too used to screen ruler to change, i've been assured that cool ruler is much better. it's even got a calculator. thanks hoffman.

it seems that there were an overwhelmingly large number of obi-wan's out there. i don't know whether it's a problem with the test, or whether it's just that the people who visit all have similar personalities. the poll's still up, if you want to add to the data pool.

another useful tool, browsersizer. thanks johnny

bad interface design can kill, in fact it killed john denver, at least according to tog. scary. thanks cam.

every web designer should have this tool, screen ruler. once you use it, you'll wonder how you could have lived without it.

jeffery zeldman advocates authorpreneurship in a list apart. it sounds like a great goal, if you have the ideas to take you there.

jon katz's latest addresses the new stats on the _decline_ of crime.

"Neither the FBI report nor the media coverage of it, addressed the central question of why, if screen-driven violence (computers, movies, TV) turns kids into killers, crime amongst the young would be dropping so sharply even as computer use is going through the roof."
maybe they'll start drawing a connection and say that the internet reduces crime? not likely.

jakob neilsen's latest alertbox is a new list of top ten mistakes of web design. i don't buy a lot of them. he's not taking into account designing for different user levels. and the generality of it all is a little too hard to swallow. but the worst thing i found was this quote regarding "mailto" links:

"it breaks the conventions of the Web when clicking on blue underlined text spawns an email message instead of activating a hypertext link to a new page; such inconsistency reduces usability by making the Web less predictable"
mailto links break the conventions of the web? whose conventions? mailto links have been around since mosaic. and they're not a web convention?

the original hacker faq.

fastcompany's take on " how to manage geeks". if companies would take this article to heart, i'd be a happy camper. i feel like i'm reading a bio. there's lots of reactions on slashdot too.

the jetson's commute is finally here.

a disturbingly high number of people seem to be "obi wan kenobi" from this test. so i decided to take a poll:

What star wars character are you?
obi-wan kenobi
darth vader
luke skywalker
yoda
other
see results

an old (7/98) salon piece on online journals. it made me rethink, _again_, my reasons for keeping one.

i'd never really considered weblogs as a form of journalism, but maybe that's a personal blind spot. thanks peterme.

apparently part of the reason women earn less than men is because they feel their careers are secondary.

5.27.99

i know, _another_ star wars link. but which character are you? i'm obi wan kenobi.

webword.com has an interesting interview with Louis Rosenfeld.

5.26.99

i started keeping a list of other weblogs because cam's wasn't up-to-date, now i'm finding it difficult to keep mine up-to-date.

lemonyellow.com has a distinctive female pov, something i don't see enough of.

it's not looking good for net ipo's this week. i really hope these stocks have an upswing soon.

5.25.99

sometimes i think of seen it all, then i come across this.

woohoo! i'm a genius! at least according to this online iq test. thanks jorn.

edit this page is dave's new vision for how writing should work. so why didn't anyone think of this before? thanks cam.

5.24.99

a new ala2 is up. of course i have no time to read it, but maybe you do.

insider views. if your into women's workplace issues.

south park meets red dwarf meets star wars = droids.

Week of May 16

5.21.99

experiences -- a pattern language for ui design.

all i can say is wow. via memepool.

part 2 of jon katz's piece on electric media deals primarily with weblogs. "To me, weblogs may embody personalized media on the Net". i'm still not sure i buy into the biological evolution comparison. thanks peterme.

squirrel fishing?

5.20.99

glassdog.drygoods is the commercial portion of glassdog.com. the use of dropdown boxes for navigation is really interesting...

jon katz has written a piece on biology and the electric community. it's an interesting analogy, but i'd like to hear a rationalization of how people change from being gatherers (people who wait for info to come to them) into being hunters (people who search for the info).

5.19.99

i'm surprised <snip> hasn't implemented any of these excellent viral marketing campaigns.

5.18.99

apparently there's a workforce gap here in silicon valley. about 160,000 jobs are taken by workers from outside the region or go unfilled. maybe if companies paid _us_ more, instead of the ceo, we wouldn't feel the need to job hop.

i want to take this perl course, i mean cruise, i mean... what do you call a course held on a cruiseship? will companies actually pay for it?

5.17.99

someone in your office hitting the crack pipe too much? send them virtual crack. thanks memepool.

should companies have a cwo (chief web officer)? as a web person, i've worked under both marketing and engineering. web doesn't belong in either of these. i've come to the conclusion that at the very least companies should have a vp of web.

wow! peterme is actually advocating splash screens! how about burying that heavy loading stuff 1 level deeper, and having a light informative homepage?

another one on the auction bandwagon.

a wealth of articles from studio verso's todd fahrner. good stuff on css.

jakob's latest alertbox is up.

Week of May 9

5.14.99

finally, you can get saved on the web!

css seems to be becoming a weblog trend first whump and now genehack.

i think today's slow because everybody's at e3.

employee burnout is becoming the latest hot problem.

5.13.99

i'm working on an experiment in collaborative fiction. i've just put it up so there's only the start of the story...

the dumbing down of the web has reached rock bottom.

no links yesterday. i was recovering from my elegant maneuver.

5.11.99

i'm beginning to regret never trying out ultima online, but i listened to a friend who said it sucked. now i'm so far behind i'd have to buy an account on ebay.

wouldn't it be cheaper to just get a real dog?

this is so me. especially the line about "they feel like high-tech janitors for corporations", why does the idiot who is totally incompetent but has a managers title get to strategize about the company direction? thanks kirk

cam's got a new rant up: more about weblogs. it's important to give credit to other weblogs when you re-digest their links. now it's not just content that's king, it's the quality of the content. offering an opinion instead of just listing a link. something to strive for.

5.10.99

i normally avoid talking about this stuff, but how can the U.S. be so incompetent? this isn't an "isolated, tragic event", this is the third or fourth "tragic" mistake they've made.

morbid.

all i can say is wierd. although i am thinking of getting one of those snazzy stickers.

the latest alistapart is up.

the official website of orson scott card has a preview of ender's shadow.

5.6.99

for an art/designer's site, this one is exceptional.

while no one can decide whether they were runners or jumpers, it's been agreed that Archaeopteryx is the ancestor of modern birds.

mr. wakeup is such a cool idea! but who wants to listen to 5 minutes of ads before you get your reminder? thanks peterme

mozilla won builder.com's web innovator awards.

5.5.99

geeks aren't buying art. all that money's going to new cars instead. artnet has gone into the everpopular auctions. i just wish i was rich enough to bid on these things.

pretty harsh assessment of the valley's companies. too bad it's so true.

i could use a little sanity. it certainly sounds better than the insanity at trilogy.

5.4.99

electronic ink. will we have thin, flexible displays on the desktop soon?

amazing. weblogs aren't a new trend the original's been around since 1993. thanks jjg.

virulent memes put's an australian spin on the weblog.

leslie should have read why i weblog by brad before she wrote her article on smug.

5.3.99

e-books for your palm. no more carrying around a book, just pull out your palm. i might learn to like this.

everything you need to cheat anyone you can think of.

a very opinionated article on weblogs. based on her assumptions, she's right, people shouldn't start more weblogs. but, there are other reasons to start a weblog that she doesn't even touch upon.

Week of April 25

not only did i buy a cellphone w/ obsolete technology, the startac is no longer going to be the smallest phone around. soon there'll be watch phones.

sun's breakout banner is just too cool. courtesy of jjg

phonespell lets you find out what your phone number spells. unfortunately my cellphone is one of those rare numbers that just don't spell anything. sigh.

4.26.99

doh. i buy a new cellphone, and the technology is already obsolete. thanks peter.

i really want to get these intacs. i just have the feeling that it's going to be big bucks. ouch. $2795/eye.

how many stock options should you get at that hot new start-up? no one knows for sure but here's how the execs figure out what to ask for.

marc rettig is on the advisory board of web99. he's got an interesting reading list.

i know, it's old, it's tired, but for some reason i have a wierd addiction to hampsterdance spinoffs. there's now cowdance, clowndance, frogdance, cartmandance and a webring too. i think i'm sick of it now. thanks internet alchemy.

today is just a star wars day. could it be... satan?! no, they were just kidding.

4.15.99

i'm scared. cell phones have now become serious fashion accessories.

and i thought internet time meant that a deadline was exceptionally short. you can even put internet time on your desktop or your palm or your webpage. i think they've got it covered. hey, wait a minute what about email?

peter dug up this really interesting article yesterday about ipo envy. the comments are great. and accurate.

audrey maclean is one of the angels that make those ipo's happen. she was on the cover of forbes in november.

4.12.99

i'm at ui99 until wednesday. so far it's been interesting. it's also been keeping me fully occupied. no links until thursday.

i'm in love. my keyboard's flooded in drool. herman miller has a store. now i just need a few million to be able to afford it all. via peterme.

another website trying to get publicity by giving away pre-ipo stock. exit23b.com will give 10,000 shares to 10 lucky people. all you have to tell them is your name and email, then just spam your friends. in case you haven't figured it out, the lowdown on 'why this is a scam' is at the chronicle.

free-pc.com is giving away 10,000 computers. all you have to do is give them lots of personal information and agree to let them serve ads on your desktop. the machine comes with a 4gb hard drive, unfortunately you only get to use 2gb because the other 2gb is used for the ads.

jakob nielsen's latest alertbox is up.

good reports has an e-commerce report for sale for $600. the exerpt about apple's online store is pretty interesting. hopefully my boss will buy the full report.
