nimby/yimby effects for simcity4.
01:59 pm
btw, i did get SimCity 4 on monday. unfortunately, i haven't been able to stop playing it since then. if you like simcity and haven't gotten it already, do so. but make sure you order the guide. the manual with the game is rather lame. most especially it doesn't mention demand caps. without that info, it's really hard to figure out why your population has stagnated. yesterday morning i finally managed to get a population of 30k. before that i kept getting stuck at 12k. last night with a little help from the message boards i managed to reach 65k. after 6 cities in the red, it was most satisfying to make a profitable one.

2 weeks ago, at the recommendation of several people on my epilepsy mailing list, i started keeping a spreadsheet tracking my number of seizures. it turns out that i was getting a huge seizure spike every monday which tapers off throughout the rest of the week. monday just happens to coincide with the hormone fluctuation of my birth control pill. so, i went into my gyn and got a completely monophasic pill. the best part of which is that i can keep taking constantly. no more weeks off. no more periods! there is also a good chance that it will cut out those seizures. which i suppose is good too.

my timing has been terrible lately. first i buy shadowflare episode 1, then i finally decide to get episode 2 last night. i discover that episode 1 is now free. i order episode 2 because i'm completely bored, and today, i get into the shadowbane beta. to cap it all off, i wouldn't be surprised if my copy of simcity 4 showed up today.

this makes no sense to me. i can pay $407 to get Microsoft Office XP Standard or i can pay $170 more and get a dell dimension pc with ms office. the upgrade from wordperfect to ms office being $180. does that mean the dell is only worth $170.

Bush Declares Sanctity of Human Life Day. isn't it ironic? "reaffirm our commitment to respecting the life and dignity of every human being." of course, that only applies to american human beings. iraqi human beings, on the other hand, don't get that kind of respect.

weird. i placed a bid on this simcity 4 game and never recieved an email saying that i'd been out-bid. very odd.

occasionally, but very rarely, something wonderful comes out of keeping a weblog. cecily was kind enough to try and get me into the beta test of a game i really want to play. whether or not it actually happens is irrelevant, just knowing someone is thinking of me brings a smile to my face. thank you cecily.

the day before, i think i got phone spam. my phone was running low on batteries and making an annoying beep while i tried to go to sleep. when i got up to shut it off, i realized that there was a text message. it said "Hi there I hope you receive this message" and listed an msn email address and a phone number with a 303 area code. which appears to be colorado. why would some stranger from colorado be sending me a text message without saying who he is and what he wants?

yesterday i got a phone call from the Domain Support Group telling me they'd like to send a fax about important domain changes that have recently happened. When asked *what* changes, the woman couldn't answer, trying to say that the fax would explain everything. when i persisted, she offered to transfer me to a customer service agent who could explain everything. after telling her i didn't have time for that, she gave me a number to call back, along with their company name. of course, my immediate reaction was to search the web to find out who they are and what the hell she was talking about. unsurprisingly, it's a scam.

i was anxiously awaiting my xmas present from amazon, and suddenly it arrived. most important on the list of books is Golden Fool (The Tawny Man, Book 2) by Robin Hobb. also in line are white apples by Jonathon Carroll, a song for lya by george r.r. martin and fast food nation (finally). no more surfing, i'm off to read...

while the new wireless streaming music players are a great idea, i'm waiting for one that lets you access the playlist from the player rather than the pc. i don't want to be running downstairs to the computer every time i need to play a certain song.

i'd really like to know which toothbrushes they reviewed. it's not really clear whether they also reviewed sonic toothbrushes.
09:49 am
i've been playing ShadowFlare lately. although i went through the demo and then purchased and completed episode 1, i'm not sure if i'd recommend it. it's very basic, very similar to diablo 1. very retro. i had a lot of fun playing it, but each episode (there will be 4 but only 3 are released) costs $14.95. so i'm still tossing around whether i want to get episode 2.
i've also been playing baldur's gate 2. i think my biggest irritation about that game is the fact that you have to manage a party. it's tedious. so, i'm now debating whether to get simcity 4. sigh. so bored.

U.S. Economy Shows Unexpected Weakness as Jobs Decline. i don't understand how the vice-president can say that the economy is growing. it's like telling a person who just go laid-off, "you're not unemployed". except the white house does it with a straight face. and expects us to believe it.

i changed my mind. i figure that if i'm going to spend years collecting a set of flatware, i'm better off buying sterling silver rather than stainless steel. my new favorite pattern is vision by international silver. replacements ltd. sells assorted pieces for much cheaper than silver superstore. but, if i'm feeling rich, i can get a 5pc place setting from them.

i've been looking at flatware. sad but true. i realized a long time ago that 8 place settings just wasn't enough for a family gathering. now i've become obsessed with it. looking on ebay can be tedious so i decided to go to the sources. unfortunately, my ideal pattern is disgustingly expensive. i suppose if i bought one piece a month i'd have a full 12 piece set in a few years.
