well, i did end up getting a ps2 for my birthday. which is today, incidently. it makes a nice change from pc games. and some of the graphics are amazing. notably, onimusha.
in other new and exciting news, i finally got a small contract for some web work. a couple more of those, and i won't have to wait tables. and there's a nice little yellow s2k sitting in the driveway which handles amazingly well.

i'm debating whether or not to get a playstation 2 for my birthday. it's very tempting. i'm just not sure if there are enough games that i'd want to play to make it worthwhile. one good thing, you can rent playstation2 games online.

i think buying a car is one of the most frustrating experiences. first you have to figure out what you want to buy. days/weeks of research, reading reviews, comparing prices, figuring out what you can afford. constantly changing your mind as different reasons for and against come up. then, once you finally decide on something, you have to go to a dealership and experience the constant jerking around as they try to get as much money as possible out of you. sigh. tonight we're driving down to seaside to buy a yellow honda s2000. this torture will finally be over.

very little happening lately. not up to surfing much, hence the lack of links. at the beginning of the week, i seriously considered becoming a jeweler's apprentice. unfortunately, the pay was 6.50/hr, and after two years of apprenticing, you might get a raise to 9.50/hr. not a very monetarily rewarding career. i don't love jewelery enough to justify the sacrifice.
santa cruz had a pink slip party on tuesday. there were a grand total of 7 companies there. only one of them was looking for a front-end person. they're in monterey. which sounds real bad until you consider that the commute is the same as going to mountain view but with less traffic. we'll see.
jason finally got his first paycheck so we managed to pay all the bills this month. with the help of some kind establishments that let you pay with a credit card. i hate to even think about how much credit debt we'll be racking up until i get a job. it's rather depressing. it also means i have to give up my car. *sob*
we're looking at a toyota mr2 tomorrow. it's half as much as the mercedes and with a nice long term on the loan our car payment will be 25% of our current bill. sigh. i love my car.

working classes. this article is centered around a conversation with barbara ehrenreich, author of nickel and dimed. it's quite disturbing to me. not only because i had so quickly forgotten the hellish conditions of minimum wage work, but because returning to that kind of work is looking to be a serious possibility. at least temporarily. disturbing. very disturbing. via metafilter.

nothing much going on here lately. my life has fallen into a quite boring routine. none of that routine being even remotely interesting enough to write down. i will say that the house has never been cleaner. i feel wrapped in a cloud of ennui. the web is boring, diabloii is boring, tv is boring... i'm currently debating which book to re-read since i've read everything and can't afford to buy any new ones. but, i can't decide because they're all boring. woe is me.
now i'm going to drag my sorry ass down to the field to give the dogs their afternoon walk. after which, i'll come back in time to cook my exhausted, hard-working husband dinner. and i bet you thought i wasn't justified in feeling so sorry for myself. waiting tables is starting to have a certain appeal...

vector park is just undescribably cool. going into the lower right image takes you into a world which is just amazingly complex. one area leading to other areas, revealing new elements. brilliant. via metafilter.

The bitter truth about fast food
. i found this article fascinating. i never realized how much research went into "natural & artificial flavorings". basically, all the processed foods you eat don't derive their taste from the food itself, but from the added flavorings. via kerplunk.

well, this explains why mcdonald's fries taste so good. maybe they should just go back to frying them in beef fat. via metafilter.
