Study: SF to lose 80 percent of dot-coms. i'm not quite sure how a real estate study corelates to 80% of the dot coms closing and 30k jobs lost. all i can tell from that study is that more office space will be available at lower prices.

it suddenly occurred to me that my t-shirt post may be misinterpreted. please be reassured that i have no self-delusions about the originality, truly inspired, brilliant graphic design that went into the t-shirt. it's a blatantly stolen concept implemented haphazardly and it won only because there was one other entry.

i don't think i mentioned this before. maybe i did. anyway, wise-women.org had a t-shirt design contest. which i entered. and you can now buy the shirt i designed.

Julia Roberts can have my tax refund. these kind of articles piss me off. why aren't people who make millions entitled to keep more of that money? but, that's not what really gets to me. because the author focuses on someone who made $50 million last year, he manages to brush under the carpet the fact that people making much more modest salaries are also in that 39.6% tax bracket. you only need to make $288k to be in the top tax bracket. so the married couple who made $288k between them ($144k ea) won't need or appreciate the extra $19k that they'd get?

we got new cell phones last night. our old ones were literally falling apart. besides, they also had a 408 area code and we were paying way too much for the tiny amount we used them. we both opted for the ultra-stylish motorola v2260 with it's hip neon phoneWrapsTM. and, of course, it's got text messaging. gotta love new toys.

i'm back on a low-carb diet. although, come to think of it, i don't think i ever mentioned being on it in the first place. which means you couldn't know that i was off it. which means that me saying i'm back on it doesn't make any sense. hmmm.
let me try that again. in dec of 1999 i started on a low-carb diet. in september of 2000 after losing 45 lbs, i eased off the diet. for some reason, i never wrote about it. every time i considered doing so, i'd change my mind. it all comes back to cultural insecurities, weight, beauty, etc. they're too hard to explain. either you understand completely, or you have no clue what i'm talking about.
by last month, i was back to eating huge amounts of carbs and i realized that my increase in petit mals seizures may have coincided with my increase in carb intake. it seemed that going back on low-carb may be a smart thing to do. besides i still have another 15 lbs to lose. i think that i was right about the co-relation between seizures and carbs. the petit mals have certainly decreased. now, if i can just get my ass off the chair and exercise, i might actually drop that last 15 lbs.

last week i finally gave in to my long thwarted need. shopping at amazon. it's been months. i read the wooden sea by jonathan carroll on saturday. he's rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors. i was again impressed by the way he stacks oddities together until you have a mind-boggling tale in which you have no idea what's going on. all you do know is that the world has gone completely insane. or maybe it's the characters that are insane.

i find it rather scary, but i've decided that i like cooking. me, the person who ate out every meal of the day, every day of the week, actually likes to cook. since we moved, we've been cooking almost every night. i'm not quite sure what that says about my mental health. especially since i'm taking care of a baby once a week, and getting up at 7:30am. i wish i could say that i've been taking too many drugs, but unfortunately, that's not the case.

well, the house closed yesterday. the credit cards got paid off. the mortgage got paid. my dad got paid. more money got sunk into the failing business to pay bills for the next two months. and i realized that now may not be the best time to get my eyes fixed. the fact that neither of us have gotten jobs yet makes holding on to the unexpectedly little money we have left much more important. so eye surgery is on indefinite hold. i think investing in a much better pair of glasses may be in order.

i'm still completely lethargic about anything web related. i just can't find the energy to care. i have had absolutely no calls from people looking to hire me and it's incredibly depressing. it's also a very common situation nowadays. at liz and andrea's housewarming party saturday, the same story was being told over and over again. i'm not sure whether to take comfort in the fact that i'm not alone or to be even more depressed because it's wide-spread. the party on the other hand was lots of fun, i caught up with a lot of people i hadn't seen in years. oddly, it seems like it's only been months.
the house closes tomorrow, so at least we'll have a decent amount of money to live off of for the next few months. i'm going to use some of that money to get eye surgery to fix my eyesight. after talking about it for 4 or 5 years, i finally made a consultation appointment for friday. unfortunately, i was told that i needed to take out my contacts 7 days before hand which meant i had to take them out thursday night. this resulted in a frantic search thursday afternoon for my glasses which i hadn't seen in 4 years. needless to say, they didn't come to light. which then resulted in me frantically trying to find an optometrist to give me an exam and an optician to get me some glasses extremely quickly. the wonderful people at eyeq saved my ass.
what's rather sad is the fact that i now realize that wearing glasses isn't the horrible nightmare it used to be back when i was 13. so just before i attempt to make it so that i never have to wear glasses again, i discover that wearing glasses isn't actually that bad.

i'm discovering all sorts of fun consequences from dot-coms going out of business. first my cobra coverage was cancelled when peoplescape closed their doors. giving me all sorts of fun health insurance problems and an $800/mo prescription bill. then, employeeservice.com, the company that handled peoplescape's hr needs (health insurance, 401k's etc.) closed their doors in january. prior to doing that, they withdrew all my 401k funds from the plan. i'm supposed to find out tomorrow what's happening with that. i have a very bad feeling that my $2200 doesn't exist anymore.

it's funny how the word "digital" can be so easily used to mislead. when we moved into the new house, we signed up for "digital cable". both of us assumed that meant we'd get a digital broadcast signal which would make having a high definition tv worthwhile. i mean it was competing with directv and all the hdtv's in the stores are using a directv feed which looks incredible, right? after much confusion over the fact that there was no svideo out connector on the back of the cable box (even tho there was a spot for one), we started to realize that "digital" cable really meant regular cable but with a nice little "digital" menu/guide system. maybe we've just been living in a tv hole for too long.
conveniently, a directv box with tivo costs exactly the same as a standalone tivo - something i was planning on acquiring anyway. needless to say, "digital" cable will be cancelled today. i think i can live without those local channels...
