well, the pros and cons between replaytv and tivo are kind of moot. according to this article, ReplayTV is getting out of the set-top device market. so now the only question is whether to get a tivo or wait until the cable company incorporates replaytv.
via pvtv found through a weblogs.com search because jesse remembered it being mentioned somewhere. 05:46 pm

it's getting down to the wire and i'm still not sure whether i'm going to sxsw. i should have bought plane tickets back in september or whenever it was that i registered. then i wouldn't have an excuse for not going. as it stands, i've got, lack of funds, house in escrow, and active job search as reasons not to go. if i wait much longer, i'll be able to add lack of flights to the list. of course, the list of reasons to go is much longer. i think this month's keyword is "avoidance". 04:25 pm

liz recommended replaytv as an alternative to tivo. so a question, for those of you who have tried both, which one is better? 04:11 pm

well, it's a little later than expected, and everyone's probably forgotten about the 8 inches of snow we had, but here's a couple of pictures.

no matter what my mood, graham joyce always seems to make me smile.

"There it was among a glittering assembly that I heard Frederick Forsythe had declined to become a patron of the Academy. 'Writing,' he had intoned, 'is like sex. You're either good at it or you're not.' To which one of the women writers present had retorted, 'Oh fuck off Freddie, hasn't anyone ever said a bit a harder and a bit faster?'"

with great sadness i watched a commercial this weekend for one of those training centers. you know, the one's who'll let you pay them good money to train you in stuff like "microsoft word, windows, excel...." and "...web design". 02:36 pm

i knew that other people were going through the same thing as me, but it never really hits home until you read an article like The new slackers and just nod your head and say, "uh huh. that's me."

"The challenge, then, is for the new slackers to figure out a way to marry the principles of nothingness and busyness in their next incarnation."

after 4 years without cable tv, we had it installed on friday. sadly, i spent all day saturday staring at the tv. that magical box which i had been deprived of for so long. by sunday, i'd remembered how tedious commercials are, how little there is that is truly interesting, and how easy it is to just watch anything no matter how dull. i'm getting the distinct impression that installing cable was a bad thing. if we don't cancel it, i'm seriously considering the value of tivo. 02:11 pm

this morning i was happily living in my dream world. that ideal fantasy of nice new house, not having to work, everything being good. this afternoon, i contemplate huge monthly living expenses, no income and an urgent need to find a job. denial can be such a wonderful thing. until reality intrudes and depression sets in. 05:16 pm

i signed the docs for our new house today. well, technically for my new house since the loan is currently only in my name. as usual, we had lots of fun trying to juggle transfers of large amounts of money at the last minute. i just want a bank account that will give me my money back shortly after i deposit it. without placing a two week hold on the funds. then again, it might help if i just planned this kind of stuff better. hopefully, we'll have the keys friday and move in this weekend. no more snow, forced air heating, 10 minute drive to work.... mmmmm. 04:04 pm

i hadn't really solidified my thoughts on the amazon honor system until i read taylor's opinions. i completely agree with his anti-micropayment statements. i can't imagine them ever working well. microdonations are an interesting side effect, but the whole microdonation thing simply feels too much like begging to even contemplate implementing it on my weblog. i have more thoughts on that, mostly having to do with my own reasons for giving or not giving to other peoples' pleas for cash, but i need to think them out some more. 05:01 pm

by the time i got around to posting the are users stupid? link yesterday, i'd completely forgotten what i wanted to say about it. here it is: it doesn't matter whether users are stupid or not, what matters is the barrier to entry vs. perceived value. if your product is perceived as something that a user can live without, then creating a high entry barrier will drive away your customers. for example, how many of you would actually be here on eatonweb if you had to sign in first? the more value a site has, the higher you can raise that barrier. however, the higher you raise that barrier, the more people you are likely to lose. jakob asks "While they certainly might be capable of jumping the barrier, why should they?" i say, because the reward is valuable enough for them to make the effort. 06:14 pm

does interface boil down to logos? is it just me, or does this little piece jump all over the place talking about several different things without connecting them or providing any proof to the assertions? 05:07 pm

Amazon debuts Honor System. hmm. considering how much amazon plans to charge for the service, we don't think many people will opt for this over paypal. although, the best test is to set up both options. if most people use amazon over paypal, then it's probably worth it. 11:33 am

this weekend was a beautiful weekend. the weather finally hit 70 for the first time in months. i had an epiphany this weekend. yesterday to be exact. driving to my dad's house, top down, wind in our hair, we were passed by an old man on a harley. he smiled at me. it was the smile of a man who knew that it doesn't get any better than this. driving down the highway, wind blowing in his face, on a beautiful sunny day. why is it that it takes someone else's obvious joie de vivre to make one realize how good life really is? 08:19 pm

in case anyone missed it, our (as in eatonweb's) birthday was on saturday. we have been contributing to the bottomless web pool of bad writing for two years now. amusingly, on our second day of weblogging, 2/4/99, we linked to the bumper dumper. today i noticed that on 2/2/01 davezilla linked to the bumper dumper. odd how long memes last. 03:49 pm

last week we got tired of blogger's (lack of) service. so we decided to check out greymatter. today we finally got around to installing it, and we *really* like it. the weblog has now been switched over to it. we think everything's been tested, but don't be surprised if stuff breaks over the next couple of days. 03:49 pm
