well, direct from the source, andrew says that pitas and diaryland combined have over 100k members. 60k is starting to seem like it may actually be a low estimate. scary. 02:55 pm

alex says he has it on good authority that pitas has several thousand more users than blogger, and diaryland is bigger than both combined. maybe 60k weblogs isn't such an unrealistic number. 10:18 am

Net Myths You Should Ignore. i think people should expecially listen to no. 2. via evhead. 01:28 pm

call me a print design snob, but i find it scary that an article about Designing Logos for Web and Print is mostly a lesson in the basics of print design (i.e. the difference between spot color and four color printing and whether to use vector or pixel-based art). unfortunately, that article is going to make any amateur web design think they can also be a print designer without any experience or understanding of print design. via tremendo. 01:17 pm

reading joe's bit on ISSN for Weblogs, i noticed the assertion "...over 60,000 weblogs in publication today..." it made me wonder where that number came from. which made me remember that pyra announced that blogger had over 60,000 users. but, 60k users != 60k weblogs.

so, i went to the source. i figure anything that hasn't been updated in the last 2 weeks has probably been dropped. which means that blogger (including blogspot) has almost 16k active weblogs. i'm guessing, but with the other numbers below, i figure there's no more than 20k weblogs.

other interesting numbers: 24k blogger blogs (that's a mouthful) have been updated in the last 30 days, but only 12k have been updated in the last week. there are 15k editthispage weblogs. bloghop lists 7k, but it is culled from blogger and weblogs.com so there's overlap, which means there's probably only ~1-2k of non-blogger weblogs. blogstart has about 800 weblogs, and my portal has 1300. unfortunately, there's no way to tell how many of the non-blogger ones are actually active and how much overlap there is in the listings. 12:46 pm

sorry for the lack of updates lately. first i was too busy working to blog, and now i'm too busy goofing off. 11:55 am

since when did usability expert = information designer? come to think of it, when did usability guru = forward-thinking tech expert? i guess this means i can add "usability expert" to my resume since the reverse must be true, information designer = usabilty expert. sadly, i don't think i'd be able to get $20k a pop for speaking. via xblog. 02:15 pm

ugh. Sarcasm, irony are out; sincerity, chivalry are in. maybe in the warped minds of tv and film. i really like the rave example as proof of the new forward-thinking attitude. of *course* everybody at raves loves each other, they're on ecstacy. i think it's more likely to prove that people need to take drugs in order to escape from the harsh reality of sarcasm and irony. via taylor. 02:26 pm

reading through the same old cabal arguments over at metafilter, i saw the word fluff. obviously, it wasn't used in this sense, but all i could think of was how yummy a fluffernutter would be right now. the marshmallow stuff they sell here in california is just *not* the same as true fluff. sigh. 05:58 pm

tom writes: " I think the time has come to accept that people who write weblogs are, at the end of the day, just acting as writers. And that writers will always care about how their work is doing, the people they feel in competition with, as well as be in awe of their forebears and heroes. These things are not just going to end because we're writing in a new form, for a new medium." 05:42 pm
